Prefab Sprout

A Life of Surprises – The Best of Prefab SproutImage via Wikipedia

With some of the most perfect sounding pop songs ever, but with
lyrics that are as deep as dreams in the dark night, Prefab Sprout burrows into my deepest self.  Memories of years gone by,  nearly forgotten friends and lovers, and the whys of my life that never seemed to get answered are sung in the songs of Prefab Sprout.

I am in the past on a road in a place familiar and yet not quite known.  Traveling.  Dreaming.  Dreaming of life and love and loss.   Why do some things happen and others do not?

I remember and then I forget, until I vaguely remember again.  Again.

And Prefab Sprout plays my dreams like a hit parade of memories.

  1. I don't recall this Lee, perhaps it's one famous in the US but didn't make the UK shores.

  3. I'm not sure why people havent heard of Prefab Sprout in the UK, I remember them, although this wasnt their biggest hit, "The King Of Rock & Roll" is well known in the UK.

  4. LEE ~
I HAD heard of Prefab Sprout, but to the best o' my knowledge I had never actually heard one of their tunes before.

I never would have expected I could like anything by a band with such a bad name, but to my surprise I found that I dug this song quite a bit.

I myself didn't find anything I would describe as a "dream quality" in the tone of 'Cars And Girls' but it was a nicely constructed Pop song with a touch of R&B or Blue-Eyed Soul to it. Color me "surprised". Thanks.

  5. Yvonne -- Sadly this group largely went unnoticed in the U.S. They are a British group. They got more recognition on your side of the pond than here.

Em -- I'm spreading the word about them.

Smurf - I first heard about them when members of U2 said this was one of their favorite groups. I checked out and was blown away by the music.

StMc -- To me Prefab Sprout has recorded some of the finest pop sounding songs, but with intelligent lyrics that talk about deep topics. You should check out some more of their music. I think they are pretty amazing.

  6. I mostly missed Prefab Sprout as they hit the big time just after I'd left school and begun my retreat into '70s rock but I do remember King Of Rock n Roll being on the radio a lot in '86.

I had no idea that they had a following outside of Blighty and am amused to know what non-Brits make of the name.

  7. Dino-- I became fanatic about Prefab Sprout in the late 80s early 90s. I got every album that I could find and tried to spread the word about their music. Is there anything to make of the name? I just figured it was some kind of weird sounding nonsense.
